Texas Wine Country

FOR
ALL IT'S UNDENIABLE CHARM, the Texas Hill Country is a “slice” of
heaven just on the outskirts of
Austin and
San Antonio, and a just bit over 3 hours from either
Houston or Dallas. In a blink of time, just over a decade, it has
been transformed into the Texas Wine Country, the epicenter of the
5th largest wine producing state in the
USA

Texas...The
Mediterranean of the USA

In
the north, summers are hot and winters are cold, so frost can
be a problem. Summer hailstorms can ruin a year's
vineyard
efforts in
minutes. Further south, rainfall may encourage rot and disease.
At times, the north wind can blast for days at a time and at
considerable strength. From the winemaker's perspective, this
description could likely describe a walk through Texas roughly
following a path from Lubbock to Houston. However, the region
described is not Texas but is the Rhone valley of France and
the cold north wind is not a Texas "Blue
Norther" but rather the classic French "Mistral." (continued)
Sweet
Texas Wine...for your Valentine

IT
APPEARS THAT PEOPLE HAVE AN increasing penchant for sweetness these
days. Many
wine magazines now hype “semi-dry” as the “new dry.” Why is this?
Well, many folks come from a generation that started the day with
a good cup of strong coffee and a newspaper. But nowadays, it
is not unusual to have a diet Coke or other caffeinated soft drink
with our morning email. Sweetness has permeated our existence,
whether in the sauce, drink or dessert. (continued)
